The ulama in north India was greatly concerned about the fall of Muslim empires. They feared colonial rulers would promote conversion and modify Muslim personal laws. To avoid this, they used low-cost lithographic presses to print Persian and Urdu translations of sacred scriptures, also religious publications and tracts. The Deoband Seminary, founded in 1867, released thousands upon thousands of fatwas instructing Muslim readers on proper behaviour in daily life and clarifying the significance of Islamic principles. Throughout the nineteenth century, several Muslim sects and seminaries arose, each with a unique interpretation of faith and each eager to expand its following and fight the influence of its opponents. They were able to conduct these battles in public owing to Urdu print.
