The Depressed Classes Association was organised by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar in 1930.
The abstract idea of swaraj did not appeal to all social groupings. One such group was the country's so-called "untouchables," who, from the 1930s onward, had started referring to themselves as Dalit or oppressed. Mahatma Gandhi stated that if untouchability was not eradicated, swaraj would not arrive for a hundred years. However, many Dalit leaders were eager to find an alternative political answer to the community's issues. Therefore, Dr B.R. Ambedkar established the Depressed Classes Association in 1930.
