The development of eyes was an adaptation that evolved in many animal groups like insects, octopuses, and vertebrates. The structure of an eye in each of these organisms was different with separate evolutionary origins.  the eyes were used by many for different purposes like sensing the intensity of light, or for searching food.

The eyes first appeared in flatworms.

Sponges had a more primitive body design and were sessile organisms. Thus, they did not require eyes.
