Detailed Solution

The development of new technology in the 19th century, like Refrigerated Ships, enabled the transport of perishable food like meat and egg. It was not until the 1870s that animals were shipped alive from the United States to Europe, where they were slaughtered upon arrival. In addition to taking up valuable deck space, animals on board often become sick, thin, or otherwise unfit for human consumption. As a result, meat was considered a luxury item by the European poor. Once the refrigerated ship arrived, perishable foods like meat could be transported long distances. In the past, animals were slaughtered for food in their native countries before being shipped frozen to Europe. As a result of this, meat prices in Europe had fallen.
