Dhangars are the pastoralist communities found in the central plateau of Maharashtra. The central plateau is a dry semi-arid area, which becomes a vast grazing ground during monsoon. The Dhangars grow bajra and harvest it by October. After October, they move towards Konkan, an area of flourishing agriculture. The Konkani peasants utilize the flocks of Dhangars to manure their fields after the harvest of Kharif crops. The stubble is also used to feed the flocks. The flocks, however, cannot survive the wet monsoon of Konkan. Therefore, at the onset of the monsoon, the dhangars move towards the central plateau and follow the same pattern every year.
