The disappearance of forests is called deforestation. Deforestation is the process of the disappearance or receding of forests. It is not a new development. Instead, it had begun centuries ago, and the consequences weren’t felt severely until now. Under colonial rule, deforestation became systematic and justified. During the British reign, trees were cut down with no regard or concern. Around one-sixth of the landmass of India were cultivation grounds in 1600. The British government cleared forests because they wanted to produce commercial crops, build ships and railways using timber, and grow plantations.
