The division of the Himalayas has been demarcated by river valleys. In addition to longitudinal divisions, the Himalayas have also been divided into areas from west to east. River valleys have marked the boundaries of these divisions. For instance, the portion of the Himalayas between the Indus and Sutlej rivers is called the Punjab Himalaya. It is also referred to as the Kashmir Himalaya and the Himachal Himalaya. Kumaon Himalayas is the name given to the section of the Himalayas located between the Satluj and Kali rivers.
