Detailed Solution

The doctrine of Lapse was the policy of annexation.
The Company believed in territorial expansion after the Battle of Buxar. For this purpose, many policies were adopted. The doctrine of Lapse was a policy of territorial expansion and annexation policy implemented by Lord Dalhousie. According to this policy, if the king died without an heir, his kingdom would be annexed by the Company. The adopted sons were not eligible for the inheritance of the throne. The kingdoms of Satara, Nagpur, Udaipur, Jhansi, etc. were annexed by the company under this policy. This policy of the company enraged many kings and queens. It was also one of the reasons for the revolt of 1857.
