The Dream of Worldwide ‘Democratic and Social Republics’- The Pact Between Nations, was a print prepared by Frederic Sorrieu, 1848.
The French artist Frederic Sorrieu created a series of four prints starting in 1848 that represented a future he envisaged as having "Democratic and Social Republics." It depicts men and women of various ages from both Europe and America marching in a long train and paying respects to the Statue of Liberty as they pass by. A female figure is seen holding the Charter of Human Rights in one hand and the Torch of Enlightenment in the other. The shattered remnants of the symbols of absolutist institutions are lying on the ground in the image's foreground. Groups of citizens may be considered distinct nations in Sorrieu's idealised depiction of the society for which the people at the time were waging revolutions and conflicts. Under a common flag, it was possible to see individuals from many racial and ethnic backgrounds, but this was not the case.
