The duodenum, jejunum, and ileum are the three major divisions of the small intestine. 

The first and tiniest segment of the small intestine, the duodenum, is in charge of receiving partially digested food from the stomach as well as bile and digestive enzymes from the liver and pancreas.

The principal site for nutritional absorption is the jejunum, which is the second portion of the small intestine. Villi and microvilli, which are millions of tiny finger-like projections that line the walls of the jejunum, significantly enhance the surface area that is available for nutrient absorption.

The last part of the small intestine, the ileum, is in charge of absorbing whatever nutrients that are still present as well as vitamin B12 and bile salts. Additionally, it aids in the movement of toxins from the digestive tract into the large intestine.
