Detailed Solution

The Dutch followed a policy of Scorched Earth in Java during World War II.
The First and Second World Wars significantly affected forests, especially in colonial lands. The Dutch immediately used the ‘scorched earth’ strategy in Java before the Japanese invasion. It refers to a military tactic where they burn their resources on their land, as it may assist or be helpful to the invader. Thus in Java, they demolished sawmills and torched massive heaps of gigantic teak logs to prevent them from falling into Japanese hands. However, the Japanese exploited the forest for their military enterprises. Many communities took advantage of this to increase forest farming. Hence, it was challenging for the Indonesian Forest Service to reclaim this territory after the war.
