Detailed Solution

The Dutch-speaking people constituted a majority in the country (Belgium) but a minority in the Capital. Belgium, a small  European nation, has a population of little over one crore but the ethnic composition of the country is very complex. The country’s 59% of the total population lives in Flemish regions and speaks the Dutch language, while the rest, 40%, speak French and live in the Wallonia region, and the remaining 1% speak German. In Brussels, the capital city, however, the scenario is different, as 80% of people speak French and 20% speak Dutch. Moreover, during the 1950s and the 1960s, the French community was relatively rich and powerful compared to the Dutch community, which got even basic facilities like education much later. Thus, tensions occurred between the two because of income disparities and discrimination against Dutch people. These tensions were worsening in Brussels because of the particular problem of the Dutch-speaking people, who constituted the majority in the country, but a minority in the capital. Thus, the Dutch people struggled hard in the capital city because of the lack of a majority there.
