Dalits and other social groups who belong to the caste system are now shielded from unfavourable discrimination in public services and educational institutions due to India's Constitution's official outlawing of untouchability in 1950. Our Constitution is committed to liberty, equality, fraternity, and social justice principles. Untouchability was consequently declared unlawful by law. The 17th article of the Constitution outlawed untouchability, and the parliament ratified a law to that effect in 1955.
