The oldest cities developed on river banks of Indus.
Cities later grew on the banks of the Ganga River and its tributaries and along the seacoasts, some 2500 years ago. Finally, 4700 years ago, the Indus Valley Civilisation flourished. The first location of this civilisation to be found was Harappa. For this reason, it is also known as the Harappan Civilisation. In many other places of the world at the same time, river valley civilisations flourished. For example, the Tigris-Euphrates river system was close to the Mesopotamian Civilisation. China's civilisation was located close to the Huang Ho River. Egypt's civilisation was located close to the Nile.
