The East India Company appointed Gomasthas to supervise weavers in India. The Gomasthas were hired to supervise the weavers and provided them with advance loans to purchase raw materials. The weavers who took out loans had to provide the Gomastha with the fabric they made. There had been instances of fights between weavers and Gomasthas in various weaving villages. Previously, supply merchants lived in weaving villages and had strong relationships with the weavers, tending to their needs and assisting them in times of crisis. The new Gomasthas were outcasts with no long-term social ties to the village.
