The East India Company appointed Gomasthas to supervise weavers in India. A Gomastha, or hired servant, was assigned to monitor weavers, collect supplies, and test textile quality.
The Company aimed to eliminate existing textile trade middlemen and brokers through a series of measures, one of which was to establish more direct control over the weaver through the Gomasthas. However, conflicts between weavers and Gomasthas occurred in a number of weaving areas.
