The East India Company made several changes to the vernacular education system. The East India Company appointed several government pandits, each in charge of four to five schools. The pandit's job was to visit the pathshalas and try to improve the teaching standards of vernacular education. Each guru was required to submit periodic reports and attend classes regularly.
