It has Mumbai (Maharashtra) in the west, Kolkata (West Bengal) in the east, Chennai (Tamil Nadu) in the south, and Delhi in the north as the extremes of this National Highway, reducing the distance between the cities. It is the largest of the highways in India, launched in 2001 under the National Highways Development Project (NHDP).
