Detailed Solution

The echoes require a minimum distance of 17.2m between the surface and the source to be observed.
The echoes are heard by us all the time. But our ears need a certain time lag between two echoes to distinguish them, which is 0.1 s. If we calculate the distance travelled within 0.1 s time by a reflection of sound, then that is the minimum distance which is required to observe echo.
Assume the distance between the source and surface d.
Speed of sound in air = 344 m/s
Minimum time lag = 0.1 s
Total distance travelled by an echo = 2d
We know, Speed =DistanceTime
         Distance = Speed × Time
                  2= 344 × 0.1
                  2= 34.4
                      d = 34.4/2
                      d= 17.2 m
∴ The minimum distance between the source and the reflecting surface is 17.2 m.
