Detailed Solution

The eighteenth century saw the rise of Madras, Bombay, and Calcutta.
During the eighteenth century, Madras, Bombay, and Calcutta grew and evolved. Europeans developed these cities, and their trading activities gave life to them. As the demand for textiles grew, crafts of weaving, spinning, dyeing, and bleaching required more artisans. Indian textile designs became defined in these towns, but in the temple town of Thanjavur, crafts were vastly different. Saliyar weavers of Thanjavur produced cloth for flags to be used in the temple festival, coarse cotton for the general public, and fine cotton for the nobility and the king. Thus, the crafts of Thanjavur were behind in time, and in Calcutta, it was in an advanced stage that surpassed its age.
