The company was founded in 1864 and is based in Kanpur, India. Elgin Mills Company Ltd. operates as a subsidiary of British India Corp. Ltd. It was a textile factory founded by the British.As colonial control increased, Indian trade began to decline. Merchants were only allowed to transfer raw materials needed by the British. The Elgin mill was established in Kanpur, following which the first cotton mill in Ahmedabad was formed. In 1874, Madras's first spinning and weaving mill started production.
