The ethnic groups that inhabited the isles were the English, the Welsh and the Irish. The history of nationalism in Britain was different from other European countries. The Act of Union 1707 led to the formation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain. By this, England was able to impose its influence on Scotland. Scotland's culture, ethnicity, religion and political institutions were downgraded. They were forbidden to speak their Gaelic language or wear their traditional dresses. The English helped the Protestants of Ireland to dominate a predominantly Catholic country. Catholics revolted against this dominance, but their angst was suppressed. By doing this, the English incorporated Ireland into the United Kingdom in 1801. The new symbols of Britain, which are the British flag, national anthem, language, and political institutions, were given preference.
