The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear cavity with the pharynx. The Eustachian tube helps in equalising the pressures on either side of the ear drum. When the pressures are balanced, the tympanic membrane vibrates freely as sound waves strike it. If the pressure is not equalized, intense pain, hearing impairment, ringing in the ears, and vertigo could develop.
