Convergent evolution is the process by which different species, facing similar environmental pressures, evolve similar adaptations independently. An example of convergent evolution can be seen in the wings of birds and insects.
Birds and insects are two very different groups of animals, yet both have wings that enable them to fly. The wings of birds and insects are not homologous. They are structurally different and haven’t evolved from a common ancestral structure. The wings of birds are made of feathers and attached to the bird’s endoskeleton, while the wings of insects are made of a thin, membranous material and attached to the insect’s exoskeleton. They evolved independently in response to the selective pressures of flight. In both birds and insects, wings provide lift and control during flight and have a relatively flat, streamlined shape that reduces air resistance.
