Detailed Solution

Alien species invasion is one of the threats to biodiversity. When alien species are introduced, some of them turn invasive, and cause decline or extinction of indigenous species. The Nile perch introduced into Lake Victoria in East Africa eventually led to the extinction of an ecologically unique assemblage of more than 200 species of cichlid fish in the lake.

The cichlid fish have jaws that can crush and chew hard food but cannot open their mouths wide and hence are slow eaters. They became extinct due to competition in the 1950s when fishermen introduced the voracious, big-mouthed Nile perch into Lake Victoria.
