In the seventeenth century, a made-up city called El Dorado in South America was also referred to as the "city of gold". According to a tale, El Dorado was where gold coins and several precious stones were discovered. Europeans believed that El Dorado was an undiscovered city of gold. Numerous Portuguese and Spanish explorers explored South America over two centuries due to their desire for money. One of the first stories was that Juan Martinez, a Spanish captain who claimed to have seen the city of El Dorado, recounted while he was still alive. Another adventurer, Raleigh, made numerous attempts to travel to the city of gold. He believed he had the possibility of discovering El Dorado.
