The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries got established in 1927.
Indian merchants and industrialists became very powerful and wealthy during the First World War. They reacted to colonial regulations that limited economic activity because they were eager to grow their business. In addition to protection from imports of foreign goods, they desired a rupee-to-sterling exchange rate that would discourage imports. They established the Federation of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FICCI) in 1927 and the Indian Industrial and Commercial Congress in 1920 to organise business interests.
