Detailed Solution

Under aerobic conditions, the citric acid cycle (also known as the Krebs cycle or TCA cycle) metabolises pyruvate produced by glycolysis to generate energy in the form of ATP.

In anaerobic conditions, where oxygen is not present, the accumulation of pyruvate leads to its conversion to lactate in order to prevent an accumulation of pyruvate that would otherwise inhibit glycolysis.

Lactate can then be used as an energy source in other tissues that can convert lactate to pyruvate and regenerate NAD+ to keep glycolysis going.
