The first bioinsecticide developed commercially on a large scale is Sporeine. It was derived or isolated from the bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis.

The active ingredient in this bacteria is a toxic protein which gets activated in the alkaline pH of the insects.
The protein binds to specific sites and creates pores on the midgut of insects which destroy the pests.
