India's first Biosphere Reserve was the Nilgiri.
The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve is located on the border of three states Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala. In 1986, it was founded. The reserve spans 5,520 kilometres. The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve has two of India's ten biogeographical provinces. As a result, it was a natural choice for the country's principal biosphere reserve. The reserve protects orchid species such as Vanda and Liparis. Some of the animals that can be found here include the Nilgiri tahr, Nilgiri langur, slender loris, blackbuck, tiger, gaur, Indian elephant, and marten.
