The first clear expression of nationalism came with the French Revolution in 1789. The French Revolution aided in the spread of nationalism by encouraging the notion that people owned the country and were an important part of it. As a result, the revolutionaries deposed the king and brought about significant social changes. In the face of nationalism, the concept of "fatherland and a citizen" was developed in order to persuade the people. Equal rights were given under the Constitution. A new tricolour French flag replaced the royal dynasty. The Estates-General was named the National Assembly after being elected by a body of active citizens.
