The first clear expressions of Nationalism came with the French Revolution in 1789.
The French Revolution aided in the development of Nationalism by encouraging the notion that individuals owned the country and were an integral part of it. As a result, the rebels deposed the monarchy and brought about significant social changes. In the context of Nationalism, the characteristics of post-revolutionary France are that the concept of the fatherland and citizen was formed to persuade the society that it had equal rights under the constitution. The royal banner was thereafter replaced with the tricolour, a new French flag. The National Assembly was named after the Estates-General, which a group of engaged citizens chose. Oaths were taken, and new hymns and songs were produced.
