Detailed Solution

The first English factory was set up on the banks of the river Hoogly.
The British East India Company was granted a Royal Charter to trade with India. On its arrival in India, the Company established its base in Bengal. They established a factory in Bengal on the banks of river Hoogly. Hooghly was considered a suitable site as it could be easy to handle imports and exports because it was approachable through ships. The factory comprised the offices of British officials. The company operated its trade through this factory. Moreover, it also stored the goods for exports and served as a warehouse. The factory served as a base for the company and as trade expanded, this base was enhanced by encouraging traders to settle around it.
