The First Five Year Plan was implemented in 1951. One of India's foremost problems after independence in 1947 was lifting the nation out of poverty. To do this, the government of independent India set up a Planning Commission in 1950, under which it decided to discuss short and long-term economic planning. The First Five Year Plan focused on the primary or the agriculture sector. The majority of the population was dependent on agriculture for their survival. Most of the population was directly or indirectly engaged in the agriculture sector; hence, it was only wise to develop the agriculture sector to boost economic development.
