The first forestry school to be inaugurated in the British Empire is located in Dehradun
Dietrich Brandis started the Indian Forest Service in 1864 and founded the Imperial Forest School in 1878 at Dehradun. Brandis, a German expert, was invited by the British. He taught the 'proper system' of managing forests, called scientific forestry, which was scientific just in name. The forestry school was the first to start in the British Empire. In 1906, the school was re-established as the Imperial Forest Research Institute.
