The first genetic material could be RNA. We know that RNA is present as a genetic material in some viruses, and it also works as a catalyst (there are some important biochemical reactions in living systems that are catalysed by RNA catalysts and not by protein enzymes). But, RNA being a catalyst is reactive and hence unstable. Therefore, it is considered that DNA has evolved from RNA thereby making RNA the first genetic material.
