The first governor general of india William Bentick.
He was the most liberal and enlightened governor-general of India and was also known as the father of modern and western education in India. He abolished Sati pratha with the help of Raja Ram Mohan Roy. He also abolished many of the cruel rites in 1829 in India. He also accepted Macaulay's minutes on education and declared that English should be the official language of India. In addition, Bentick abolished the courts of appeal and circuit set up by Cornwallis.
