Detailed Solution

The first Indian weekly was called the Bengal Gazette. The publication, which was started by the eccentric Irishman James Augustus Hickey, was a vocal opponent of Governor General Warren Hastings' rule. The newspaper played a significant role in the struggle for free speech in India and for its controversial journalism. The writing of Hicky's Bengal Gazette was notoriously acerbic and thought-provoking. The publication, unlike many others of its day, covered taboo subjects and early forms of class awareness while promoting the rights of the underprivileged and the need for taxes with representation.  It openly mocked the leadership of the East India Company for its imperialist and expansionist goals and was vehemently anti-colonial and anti-war.
