The first Iron and Steelworks in India were set in year 1907. Founded by Jamsetji Tata and Dorabji Tata, the Tata Iron and Steel Company is the first iron and steel plant set up in India on 26 August 1907 in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. Tata iron company started the production of pig iron in 1911 and Tata steel company started the production in 1912. During the First World War and by 1939 the Tata iron and steel company made rapid progress. It became the largest steel plant, operating under the British Empire. The headquarters of Tata Iron and steel company is in Mumbai, Maharashtra and its marketing headquarters are situated in Kolkata and West Bengal.
