The first jute mill set up by Marwari businessman Seth Hukumchand in 1917 was located in Calcutta. Seth Hukumchand was recognised as the "Cotton Prince of India." As head of the "Madhya Bharat Hindi Sahitya Samiti," he also took part in the 1920 Khadi movement and the 1931 Swadeshi movement. Seth Hukum Chand founded the mills known as Hukum Chand's and Rajkumar in Indore. He also founded the largest jute mill and an iron mill in Calcutta in 1917, the first jute mill created by a Marwari merchant.
