Seth Hukumchand, a Marwari trader, founded the first jute mill in Calcutta in 1917. Known as the "Cotton Prince of India," Seth Hukumchand. He participated in the 1931 Swadeshi movement and the 1920 Khadi movement as the leader of the "Madhya Bharat Hindi Sahitya Samiti." The Hukum Chand and Rajkumar mills were established in Indore by Seth Hukum Chand. In 1917, he established the first jute mill built by a Marwari businessman, Calcutta's largest jute mill and an iron mill.
In 1859, the first jute plant opened in Risra, a town adjacent to Kolkata. The jute industry in India was first developed in West Bengal.
