The first major test of Indian federalism was the creation of linguistic states.
After the Independence of India in 1947, the political map of India which had many old states and many new states was to be reorganised. Names, areas and boundaries of the state were to be reorganised and changed. It was finally decided that the reorganisation will be done on a linguistic basis. All the alternation was made by taking into consideration that the same language-speaking people live in the same state. When the demand for more linguistic states was raised, there was fear of disintegration of the country. The Central government resisted these demands.
