Bengaluru became an important military center in 1809 after the British cantonment was built there. The first railway line was constructed in Karnataka in 1864 on British advice. At that time, the British government requested the Madras Railway Company to start building the railroad line. In August 1864, a 149-km railroad line that connected Bengaluru Cantonment and Jolarpettai in Tamil Nadu's Vellore region and extended to Madras was finally inaugurated for traffic. In order to connect Bengaluru and Madras, the first railway line was constructed in Karnataka.
