The Adivasi people of the princely state of Bastar in central India staged the Bastar Rebellion, sometimes referred to as the Bhumika (earthquake), in 1910 against the British Raj. It was principally commanded by the tribal chieftain Gunda Dhur and Lal Narendra Singh, a diwan and the king's cousin. Unfortunately, the state's small, 250-person police force was overrun entirely by tribal mobilisation, which resulted in widespread rioting, looting, and burning. As a result, the state revolted against the British colonial administration. But by February, more forces from the nearby Jeypore and Bengal had stopped the uprising and captured its commanders.
