Detailed Solution

The first Viceroy of India was Lord Canning, who served from 1858 to 1862. A body known as the India Council was appointed to advise the Viceroy. The Viceroy title, which designates a personal representative of the Crown, was given to the Governor-General of India. This was one of the significant changes made as a result of the British Parliament's passing of a new Act in 1858, which gave the British Crown direct control over India.
