On 28 June 1914, a young Serbian patriot killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in the city of Sarajevo, sparking the start of World War I. The First World War was fought in Europe. But people throughout the world were affected by it. A conflict involving two power blocs. The Central Powers, which included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Ottoman Turkey, were on the other side of the Allies, which initially consisted of Britain, France, the US and Russia.
