Detailed Solution

Fish take in oxygen-rich water through their mouths and pass it over their gills. Inside the gill filaments, a dense capillary network absorbs dissolved oxygen from the water. The circulatory system then transports this oxygen to body tissues and cells. Thus, fish breathe through gills, as they lack lungs.

In most species, the gill filaments and lamellae contain blood or coelomic fluid, enabling efficient gas exchange across thin walls. Oxygen from the water diffuses into the blood, while carbon dioxide diffuses out into the surrounding water.

Gills or gill-like respiratory structures are found not only in fish but also in other aquatic organisms such as molluscs, crustaceans, insects, and amphibians. Some semi-terrestrial animals, like crabs and mudskippers, have special gill chambers that retain water, allowing them to continue absorbing dissolved oxygen even on land.
