Detailed Solution

The flood in Maharashtra and Gujarat in 2006 occurred due to the release of water from dams during heavy rainfall. Several districts in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh were flooded due to torrential rainfall, resulting from which several rivers flowed above danger thresholds, including the Tapti River, which had reached its highest flood level ever. There was an enormous flood in Tapi, Surat, on August 7, caused by the abrupt release of large amounts of water from the Ukai dam. This was the worst flood in 34 years. The river level in Surat exceeded the previous peak of 12 metres (from the 1968 flood) and reached 12.5 metres, flooding more than 80 per cent of the city.
