Detailed Solution

The famous Chauri Chaura incident occurred in Gorakhpur, situated in Uttar Pradesh, in 1922.
The incident happened on February 4, 1922, in Chauri Chaura, Gorakhpur District, United Province (Uttar Pradesh), British India. The Non-Cooperation Movement demonstrators, who were in considerable numbers, battled with the police, who then started firing. In retribution, the protesters assaulted and destroyed a police station, murdering everyone who was inside. Three civilians and 23 police officers died in the incident. As a direct result of this occurrence, Mahatma Gandhi, who vehemently opposed violence, ended the Non-Cooperation Movement on a national level on February 12, 1922.
