Mohandas Gandhi was the prominent leader of the Dandi March, sometimes called the Salt March, and Dandi Satyagraha. It was a direct action movement of tax opposition and a peaceful protest against the British salt monopoly. Beginning on March 12, 1930, the Salt Satyagraha lasted until April 6, when Gandhi breached the Salt Act in Dandi. More than 390 kilometres from their starting place at Sabarmati Ashram, Gandhi and 78 trusted followers set off on foot for the remote seaside areas of Dandi in Gujarat. Thus Gandhiji broke the Salt Law by making salt by boiling the seawater.
